PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 21.7M Units

The freshest gaming console by Sony seems to not become a failure, having sold enough units and receiving more exclusive games. Yet it has taken it seven quarters to reach 21.7 million shipped units. While this sounds quite solid, the experts remind you that it took PlayStation 4 less time to reach that number, and in seven quarters, it sold about 25.4 million units.

PlayStation 5 has had an unlucky time from the beginning. The world was suffering from lockdowns caused by COVID-19, and the following events did not help much. Yet the Japanese company managed to deliver its nextgen console to most markets, and while the demand was not satisfied in time, gamers worldwide are good with how the new console performs. So the console is worth the wait if somebody has to.

The operating profit of Sony PlayStation business had also dropped by about 37%, compared with the same quarter of 2021. Business unit sales have also declined, but not that significantly – by 2% only. It’s not Sony’s fault, but rather that of the overall situation. But it can’t be said about its monthly active user decline, which now reached 3 million players, resulting in 102 million MAU. This probably has something to do with the content Sony offers.

At the same time, Sony officially stops selling PlayStation 4 (though retailers still have lots of consoles on their shelves and in warehouses). If its sales are frozen at 117 million units, this makes it the second bestselling gaming console of all time, only behind PS2. This year, though, it can be outsold by Nintendo Switch (in all modifications), which is far from being discontinued, despite its already long lifespan.
